Date 4: Almost there

The week has been slowly calming down and I’ve gotten a handle on some of the bigger projects I had to tackle this week.  On the downside, that pulled muscle in my leg is really hurting this week and really making my water aerobics classes a chore – even with me easing back during the class.

This afternoon will be busy with appointments but tomorrow is pretty much empty and hopefully I’ll get a chance to unwind before the weekend starts.

As a side note: my parents aren’t having that great of a week either and they could use prayer.  Mom drives a big dodge van for her work. She’s a real estate agent so lots of sign lugging around and also she does window treatments (that is a fancy word for  curtains) and the business she works for in the window department had her parked outside unloading some garbage from the back of the van two days ago.  The owners son and a friend were “joyriding” around on a tractor and backed up.. straight into the back of the van.  Both open doors in the back were bent at odd angles and the back of the van totaled.  Unfortunately, the damage is estimated at $3,700 and you really can’t get a van with as much work done in it as that van has for that amount of money – provided the insurance company estimates that much damage.  We know all things happen for a reason – but that van was just needed for a few more years.

My dad insists it’s the Presley Curse.  Things just seem to go wrong for us more often than not.  I’m just glad there are so many of us that it gets spread around a little! And the family support helps too.

Day 3: Ouch.

One word is all I need to sum up todays workday.

Migraine.

Ouch.

Day 2: The Day of Weirdness

So it’s Tuesday, and I must have forgotten to mark on my calendar that today is a day in which weird remarks will be made to me and odd occurrences will take place.

1st.  An elderly gentlemen stopped in to make an appointment for later in the week.  After the appointment was set up and I bid goodbye to him, he paused and said that he is a big sci-fi fan, that there were not a lot of science fiction fans in the world, and that he is on a science fiction website.  Obviously he’s never heard of the many game conventions throughout the nation – but what disturbed me the most is the way he said he was on a science fiction website.  Now I’ll have all sorts of horrific visions picturing him in some strong alien get-up.

2nd. Due to my recent infatuation with Red Dwarf and after watching the first episode of Season 2 last night in which they introduce an android who looks as if he’s made of mashed potatoes, I dreamed last night that I was dating a mashed potato man.  It was disturbing enough to wake me up at 5:30 a.m. after I licked his face. Gross.

3rd.  For the first time in.. I dunno, 3 months, I find myself having the same problem I had as a teenager.  I have a hard time keeping my mouth closed … literally.  This leads into a story.

When I was young I had a serious overbite which my parents saw fit to fix through braces when I was 16 after several mishaps including the following story:

There is a major problem to having a large overbite.  It’s difficult, and sometimes painful, to keep your mouth closed.  As a result, when thoroughly involved in something like say… piano playing, it’s easy to forget to swallow saliva and combine saliva with an open mouth and… well you can figure that out.

When I was around 14 or 15 I was competing in some piano playing competition.  I think that was the year I was competing in both the Jr. Virtuoso and Virtuoso categories.  Anyway, I was playing Brahms and I remember how thoroughly involved I get when playing that particular piano piece (Intermezzo in A Major).  There were quite a few mishaps that occurred by the time I made it to the piano – mostly due to my clumsiness and height, but when I sat down and began to play I totally lost myself in the zone.  This caused two problems.

  • My mouth dropped open.
  • Saliva formed… and dropped right onto the keys.

The feeling of my saliva on my fingers brought me abruptly out of “the zone” and I began to panic while playing.  My first thought was that I couldn’t play the upcoming part of the piece with slippery fingers.  My second thought was… oh no, how was I going to get the saliva off the keys for the person who came after me?  Do I stand up afterwards and rub my skirt over the keys?

I finished playing Brahms (flawlessly I might add) and stood up.  So I would like to take this opportunity to formally apologize to the person who played on the piano after me that day.  I was just so embarrassed, you see.  And no, it wasn’t sweat that had you and your family casting glances at me as we waited for the winning lists.

Day 1: Getting the week started

This week my co-worker and friend is out of town on vacation so I am left behind to hold down the fort. Friday of last week was actually day one, but I prefer to forget that particular day as it was hell. Well, the evening wasn’t – the evening was this totally hilarious bit of the day made even more hilarious by the fact that I hadn’t laughed all day.

Last Friday evening I attended the 22nd annual “Mr. Chillicothe” contest sponsored by the Chillicothe Lions Club. I help in a lot of the preparations for this contest by typing up the letters and mailing things out as a part of my duties at work. Most years only a portion of the contestants show up – usually the older ones but this year.. all nine made an appearance and boy, oh boy were they acting up for the crowd.

The business suit contest saw everything from the Park District manager wearing shorts and a polo shirt to the young men sporting some nice, funky plaid pants with suit jackets… do some of the middle-aged men wearing pants that (they claim) fit in 6th grade and ties made for 5 year olds.

The contestants are encouraged to bring items to auction off – and so they did. Items ranged from pool passes to buckets of alcohol and t-shirts to, and this was my personal favorite, a date with one of the contestants. Yes, he auctioned himself off… and got $85.00 donated to the Lions Club as a result of it.

All in all it was a fun night and the Lions Club raised over $2500 towards it’s scholarship and eyeglasses program.

But now it’s Monday, and I’m headed back from lunch – so I’ll wrap this up. I’ll be sure to surface every now and then this week and post an update so you folks all know that I haven’t drowned under paperwork.

Bad Days

Ever have one of those bad days at work that is so bad it just extends… seeping and crawling through the days following it and completely tainting them with nastiness and bad humor?

I had one of those days on Tuesday. To make matters worse, what made that day bad was just 20 whole minutes at the very beginning of the day.

I woke up late (always a bad start), was in and out of the shower in a flash, dressed and out the door within 10 minutes and off I ran to work (the whole.. across the street run). When I got to work I put my hand to my side for some reason..and felt threads on my pretty, spring colored skirt. My first thought was “HORROR. IS MY SKIRT UNRAVELING?”. It wasn’t – oh no, something much simpler than that – I put my skirt on inside-out. So – off I ran to the ladies room to fix this before anyone saw me!

A word of advice. Do not try to quickly do the inside-out skirt fix when the following forces all combine:

1. Slippery sandals

2. Slippery floor

3. Slippery skirt

You guessed it. My slippery sandal got caught up in the slippery skirt and landed just like that on the slippery floor. And down I went..

Ya’ll, I never knew I could do the splits before.

So, for the last few days I have been experiencing mind-numbing pain whenever I walk. You see, the back muscles of my right leg were pulled, and the front muscles of my left leg were pulled so as I walk I get this incredible experience of pain from the front and back – and it’s throwing my balance off!

In other news – tonight is the big Mr. Chillicothe contest, hosted by the Chillicothe Lions Club, during our local Claud-Ellen Days festival. I will stand and cheer with the rest of them as various men from our community parade around the stage in business and swimwear attire, answer silly questions and auction off personal items all in the name of charity. I just hope I’ll be able to stand that long – although sitting is just as painful!

Next week I’ll be starting ballroom dancing classes at our local community center. Unfortunately, the massive guilt trip I tried to lay down on my brother, Alec, last night did not work so I’ll be attending the classes alone. Maybe I will find a little old man who will be willing to dance with me. I will keep you all updated!
