I wasn’t sure what to expect really when I picked up The Book of Fires by Jane Borodale. What I got was something that captured my attention for the last two days.
This is a book about Agnes, a young, unmarried, pregnant woman. The place and time period is England, 1752-53. Agnes flees a miserable existence in Sussex to go to London and along the way meets a high-class prostitute, a mysterious fireworks maker and several other fascinating characters.
The amount of detail in this book is staggering. Time seems to move at a crawl but the world and characters just oozed life. Not a happy novel, by any means, I was actually quite depressed while reading it (but wanted to continue because I needed to find out what happened to Agnes).
If you are looking for an interesting historical novel, and one that deals with some scientific information as well as an interesting story, then I’d recommend this book. Fascinating look at that time period.

That sounds very different, seems like something my sister would really enjoy. Thanks for the recommendation.
It was different and not at all what I was expecting. Very, very heavy.
