The Poacher’s Son by Paul Doiron

The Poacher's Son (Mike Bowditch Mysteries) The Poacher’s Son by Paul Doiron

Pre-Order on Amazon: The Poacher’s Son by Paul Doiron

I’m going to split my review of this book into three separate parts. Beginning, Middle and End.

Beginning: It gets off to a slow start. The back and forth with only a bit of information given in both is, while I understand necessary, confusing and left me feeling, honestly, a bit bored. It didn’t grab my attention like other mystery/suspense novels do at the start and it left me feeling like I might have a hard time getting into the story.

Middle: The story finally gets moving around chapter 7 or so.. but really picks up around chapter 18. Finally it got to that point that I look for in mystery novels that I didn’t want to put it down. I was completely taken in by the story and making assumptions right and left and being constantly surprised.

End: About fifteen pages from the end I kept looking at the book and thinking..there’s no way Doiron can wrap this all up. He did, however it felt rushed and incomplete, but perhaps that was just me reeling from the shock of the ending. My biggest complaint was that the book felt about 20-30 pages too short.

Overall, it’s an intense, brutal suspense/mystery read and one worthy of checking out. I’m not normally a big reader of this genre but it seems like, especially for a debut author, Doiron did a great job of carving a niche for himself.

This review is my honest opinion of this book and was not influenced by B&N or the Author.

Pick my reading list for April 12-19

If you are like me, you love reading so much that sometimes – it’s all you can think about, talk about, dream about and.. well do!  I literally overflow with book suggestions and am constantly passing out books or recommending titles to everyone from strangers I meet at the book store and library to family members and friends.  And, for me, there’s nothing more frustrating then recommending a REALLY good novel to someone and learning months later that they still haven’t read it!

Oh, there’s always good reasons for reading – but the following are not good reasons:

  1. My dog chewed up the book before I could read it.
  2. I used it to sit on while practicing piano!
  3. I didn’t like the cover!
  4. The name made it sound not good.

Just a few!  I take all the book suggestions I receive very seriously.  Some I read and love, and others not so much, but I value my friendships and relationships with the folks recommending books to me and I think of it as a sign of respect that I at least give the book a shot so I can discuss it with them, good or bad!

Now, of course this is not SERIOUS BUSINESS to me.  It’s all fun and I realize that many times people just don’t have the time and patience to read everything I recommend to them.  That being said, I’d like to do a bit of giving back to make up for all those times I’ve said, “You should read this..”

Here’s the deal.  In April I’ve set aside the week of April 12-19 to read selections picked by YOU.  There are a few rules to this however (and I do plan on making this a monthly event depending on the feedback I receive.)

Here’s the rules!

  • The book cannot be any longer than 350 pages.
  • Must be in one of the genre’s I’m currently accepting for reviews (HOWEVER – I will accept something out of that genre if you think it is ohmygawd drop dead amazing)
  • Must be a book that’s available to me via my library system (or that I can purchase cheaply or get through paperbackswap).  Alternatively, I will gladly accept a copy of your book and ship it back to you after it’s been read, but this is at your discretion.
  • I will feature your blog along with my review of the book – if this isn’t okay, let me know.

I am a speed reader, so I can usually read between 5-7 books in a week at that length.  I will use random.org to pick the comments and choose the books that way – but I will also promise to put all titles on my ever-growing TBR list.

Following the week of April 12-19 I will then do a giveaway of the book I loved the most out of the weeks reading.

Sound like fun? I think so – and I look forward to seeing what all you recommend to me!  All suggestions must be received by one week from today, March 25, 2010 so I can get those requests in to the library.

My Favorite Reads – March 18

Alyce at At Home with Books hosts this meme – and it’s one of my favorites.  It’s funny – I was going to talk about Frances Hodgsen Burnett’s book The Secret Garden today but Alyce already covered it! So instead I’m going to talk about the first book of a series that I go back to read over and over again (and slowly have started collecting the hardcover copies of).

Alexander McCall Smith hit the jackpot when he started writing this series.  I’d never even heard of him until a few years ago when I read a post on Kari’s blog talking about one of the later books.  I was fascinated and immediately requested them from my library.

There is something about Alexander McCall Smith’s writing that makes me feel as if I’m wrapped in a warm blanket, sipping a hot cup of tea (African Red Bush even!) and the world around me is slowing down.  These are my de-stress books, the books that make me feel that no matter how crazy and stressful life is around me, it is possible to stop and smell the roses.  A different picture of Africa is painted in these books – and Africa was never a place I had wanted to go visit until I started to read about Precious and her friends.

If you haven’t read this series I recommend you do so!  His other series are charming and wonderful as well.  But I always recommend this series as the one to begin with simply because it is the one I fell in love with first.  And Kindle and Nook users (not sure about other ebook stores) you can buy the first of this series The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency for $1.99 right now! Such a steal.

What about you? Have you read any of his writing?
