The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams

I have absolutely nothing profound to say about this book. I don’t even know why I liked it as much as I did (perhaps even more than Hitchhiker’s Guide). I will tell you that I snorted, giggled, chortled, laughed and cried my way through it.
Thank goodness these are short books though – seriously. The weird factor in them gets a tad overwhelming at times and I have to put the book down and go do something else before my mind explodes.
And I swear I will never look at a steak the same way again.
I think, by far, my favorite character is Marvin. There is a scene in this novel where he faces off against a more powerful robot and it had me laughing so hard (in Starbucks of all places!) that I had tears rolling down my cheeks. For some reason the image, the voices – everything came to life in my imagination during that one scene and it was almost too much to handle. And yes, I do have a strange sense of humor.
Really fun book and I’m looking forward to the next.. but first I think I’ll take a little break. Too much Adams and I’m afraid I’ll spend the next week speaking to my table to see if I get a reaction from it.

I’m actually surprised that you never read his books. The Hitchhiker books are far tamer than the Dirk Gently books.
I remember attempting Hitchhiker’s Guide when I was in my early 20′s and, at that time, mostly reading romance novels. Needless to say.. it didn’t capture my attention. Then.. I just never went back to them until this year!
This series is one I LOVED when I read it! My friend got me reading them during Senior Year of High School. I also loved the movie. Probably for the randomness of it all. I do wish they had done a few things differently with the movie, but I had a lot of fun picturing stuff as I read the books.
These books are so hilarious in a seriously random way … this been said, I wouldn’t be able to re-read them! I think that after the first time, when every other sentence has you snorting coffee out your nose, what is really funny would seem a little too silly.
@Bella It really did seem that way after a while – that’s why I can’t just plow through book after book of them. The strange factor gets just… TOO strange.
@Catie I haven’t seen the movie! I’ve heard good and bad things about it..but I think I’ll have to check it out and see for myself!
This is one of my favorite series. I always pick one up when I need a laugh. This happens to be my favorite of the series because of Marvin.
@Allie I hear you – that scene when he’s facing down the bigger, badder robot had me rolling.
I am so with you on the short thing. I read all of the books in a row because I bought one large volume with all the books in it, and as much as I laughed my way through it, I thought it was really hard work at times, it was just so crazy!
Marvin is my favourite too
Well, when your table talks back to you, let me know and I’ll have the men in white come for you with a pretty pink jacket.
I’ve never read any books by Douglas Adams, but I could definitely stand to add more comedy to my life.
@Hannah LOL! I’d recommend these books – but take them in small doses or you too could end up talking to your table!
Is this the author of Hitchhicker’s Guide? My son talks about that one. Not sure I can do crazy for long although I like the idea of snorting, giggling, chortling, and laughing!
