The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien
The Two Towers is one book where the movie and the book cause two completely different reactions from me. The movie – not so much a fan of. It’s okay but it’s the middle movie, it’s the go-between. But the book.. man, every time I read this book I forget just how much greatness is in it.
Seriously, Boromir’s fall, the battle at Helms Deep, the march of the Ents, the reintroduction of Gandalf.. as the White. The characters are so fantastic with my favorite being Éowyn. Such incredible, understated strength she has.
But most of all, and surely this is a surprise to those of you who know me!, I love the tales told by Fangorn (Treebeard) of the Entwives. I love the stories and songs and the way of life of these creatures. I feel their sorrow at the loss of the forests around Isengard, understand their rage and get a thrill of a mixture between fear, sorrow and excitement when they start on their march. These battles are so huge, so full-scale it seems like it would be impossible to fully grasp what is going on, but still, if you pay attention, the scene opens up and it is unlike anything I’ve read before.
I love the beginning and the end of the trilogy is fantastic beyond fantastic, but The Two Towers is something special too and I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting it.
I am so with you. There is so much that is special and exciting about this installment, but the movie did not do it justice like the other 2 movies. I never tire of reading the march of the ents and I love it when the palantir become a big part of the story.
