Unknown by Rachel Caine

I admit it. I’m a Rachel Caine junkie. i got hooked on the Weather Warden series and now I’m thoroughly hooked on the Outcast Season series. I think I might actually like Cassiel better than I liked Joanna. (I know, insert gasp here).

This is what I love about these books. I can expect for 300ish pages to get tons of action, steamy hot characters (with none of the smut that’s typically accompanying said steamy hot characters), guns, crime-fighting, magic, fantasy and a story that has so many twists and turns it’s impossible to see where it will end.

That’s what Rachel Caine has given me in every single one of these Warden books I’ve read and she did it again in Unknown. So. Much. Fun.

The Lost Books of the Odyssey by Zachary Mason

I did not expect to like this book. First of all, let me just say that I have not read the Odyssey. I was familiar with most of the names in this book from various movies I’ve seen and the Odyssey is on my list of to-read books in the “someday” place. That said, I wasn’t sure what I’d think of this book when I picked it up, but it’s small size went a long way toward reassuring me.

What I didn’t count on was the fact that I didn’t want it to end.

Filled to the brim with short stories of “what if’s”, this book had me constantly saying “just one more story” before I would put the book down. I wasn’t able to take more than 3-4 stories in a row though before I felt the need to really set the book aside and think on it for a while, so that was the second thing that surprised me. What I thought would be done in an afternoon of reading took me almost a week to digest.

Thrilling, beautifully written book. Highly recommended if you have or haven’t read the Odyssey.

The Girl with Glass Feet by Ali Shaw

This was one crazy book. What I did enjoy the book was how off the wall, out of the ordinary it was. The story is centered around two kooky people: Ida, a girl who has slowly begun to turn to glass from her feet working upward and Midas, a boy who is an amateur photographer who has massive family issues from his past and some experience with the strange island this takes place on.

What kept me from enjoying the book as much as I had hoped to was how confusing it was. There was so much random weird stuff going on and so much hopping between flashbacks to the present without any warning or clarification that it was a flashback that I spent most of the book being confused as to what was actually happening.

Finally toward the end everything came together a bit, but by then the book had really lost me and I was just pushing to get to the end of the book. I didn’t feel that connection I like to feel with the characters, especially when I can sense something tragic about to happen and instead of feeling heavily impacted by the turn of the story I felt mildly affected.

Interesting premise, strange way of going about telling the story.
