A year ago I couldn’t have told you what Southern fiction was. Sure, I knew about stories like Gone with the Wind – but that’s a classic. Then as I started branching out and trying new things I started to read some of these Southern novels.

A few were not so good. A few were great. And then I picked up the story of CeeCee Honeycutt.

You ever watch a movie and just feel yourself relax into the story, longing to be there but grateful you aren’t so you can thoroughly enjoy getting to see all sides of the story? That’s how this book made me feel. The entire tone of the book made me long for sweet tea, a broad, wraparound porch, a rocking chair and flowers surrounding me. I’m a fast reader, but I kept slowing down on the dialogue, hearing it spoken slowly in my mind.

CeeCee Honeycutt is a young girl – a girl who lives a horrific life until an equally horrific event happens. Then things change and she’s introduced to an incredibly colorful, delightful set of characters that had me laughing until tears came to my eyes, and crying feeling the heartache being written of.

This is easily one of my favorite books for this year. Up until this point I wasn’t much of a Southern fiction type girl but Beth Hoffman has won me over.
