TBR Readathon – Day 2 Update

Still going strong during this Readathon!  I’ll be finishing up my 2nd book of the day here after I put this post up and starting in on my third!  I’ve spent the day literally just sitting and relaxing and feel like I’ve accomplished so much.

Read & Reviewed:

  1. Armed and Magical by Lisa Shearin
  2. The Trouble with Demons by Lisa Shearin (Review up in the morning)

Time spent writing: 2 1/2 hours

Armed & Magical by Lisa Shearin

Armed & Magical (Raine Benares, #2) Armed & Magical by Lisa Shearin

Buy on Amazon

Summary:

All Raine wants is her life back—which means getting rid of the stone and the power it possesses. To sort things out, she heads for the Isle of Mid, home to the most prestigious sorcery school, as well as the Conclave, the governing body for all magic users. It’s also home to power-grubbing mages who want Raine dead and goblins who see her as a thief. As if that’s not enough, Mid’s best student spellsingers are disappearing left and right, and Raine’s expected to find them.

Lives are at stake, goblins are threatening to sue, mages are getting greedier, and the stone’s power is getting stronger by the hour. This could get ugly.

My Review:

If you are a Team sort of girl this book is going to delight you. I cannot decide if I’m Team Mychael or Team Tam .. but I can tell you both men in this ongoing story of Raine Benares are yummy and fun to read about.

I love these Raine books. They are exactly the kind of book I wish I could write. They are full of wit, action and steamy clean fun. Are you a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Then these are the books for you.

In Armed and Magical a few more bits and pieces about the past are revealed and a new enemy set up that raises the notch on the excitement factor even more. Piaras is, I think, my favorite character after Raine. There’s such an innocence about him – but every time he starts his spellslinging (working magic through songs) I get a little thrill and have to fight the urge to fist pump and scream GO GET ‘EM!

Shearin does a fantastic job of creating a fun world, making the politics of that world easy to understand and providing easy, fun magic to read about. These books are highly addictive so if you want to read them make sure you have all four that are out handy.

TBR Readathon – Day 1 Update

I was just too exhausted to post this last night (I know, I know.. how hard is it to type out a quick update, but in my defense I was already getting a jump start on my next book and didn’t want to leave Raine, Mychael and Tam in the lurch!)

I feel fantastic about what I accomplished my first day of the Readathon!

Read & Reviewed:

  1. The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly
  2. Magic Lost, Trouble Found by Lisa Shearin

Two-Sided Tuesday: June 15, 2010

Two-Sided Tuesday is a day where I take a more popular read that people are familiar with and offer another book that’s similar and (in some cases) better, in my own opinion.

8th Grade Superzero by Olugbemisola Rhuday-Perkovich is a fantastic novel about an 8th grade boy who just wants to get through school without being noticed.  But life has other plans in store for him – from being a “big” brother to a young, homeless boy to running for the class president, this story surprised me (and has gone on to compete in the 3rd bracket for the YA Debut Book Battle!) and comes highly recommended any chance I get to talk about it to people.  And if you decide to read it.. remember me when I tell you.. the Dora shoes is the best part.

Another book that I recommend all the time is Marcelo in the Real WorldI’ve already featured this once on a Two-Sided Tuesday but.. I seriously cannot recommend it enough.  Francisco X Stork takes on faith, innocence and the world in this book and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute I spent reading it.

My review of 8th Grade Superzero.

My review of Marcelo in the Real World.
