Please leave your comments in this post for the first four chapters.  If you have questions, just post them and I will continually update this post with them for people to answer (debate questions, confusion.. whatever =)

Remember – every comment you make that discusses the book (needs to be more than “I like it!) will be an entry into the contest.

The winner chosen by random.org once the month has finished will receive the following for participating:

  1. Any item valued at $20 or less from ME! Bath – for that nice, relaxing spa time needed with a good book.
  2. One surprise book chosen from my bookshelves.  The choice I will be making will be determined on what I’ve learned about you in the upcoming discussions (and I do a pretty good job of picking books out, don’t worry!)

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  • Asked by Lydia: Do you think Wilkie Collins saw the female sex in those two extreme figures as portrayed by Laura and Marian, or do you think that he was (as Marian does to her own sex) mocking the view of the world at that time period when it came to women. If a woman was beautiful she must be weak and insipid, and if she was ugly, then she must be smart, self-confident and assured (and very unlikely to marry). How has that changed, or not, in todays world? Do you think people still view women in this way?
