2012 Western Genre Challenge

(This button is.. not permanent –

if you would like to donate one, please contact me!)

This is my first year hosting a challenge, and I’m excited to be doing it!  My dad is a big-time Western reader, and has been on me to experience the genre, so I figured I might as well make a challenge out of it.  Surely there are others out there interested!  So sign up, and let’s revive some of those dime novels out there.

The Rules:

  • Each book read must be “Western”.  Reading a non-Western book by an author who also writes Western’s does not count.
  • Books can be 100 years old or 1 year old. Age doesn’t matter.
  • To be eligible for the challenge, you must sign up below with a link to your Challenge post (which will include your master list of books read).
  • You must post your reviews.  They can be posted to your blog, or to your GoodReads, Amazon, Book Depository, etc accounts, but they must be posted online and links provided either here, or on your blog Challenge list.
  • Feel free to come back and leave comments on how you are doing.  Each month, the drop-down list under this challenge will have a page with another Link list.  Enter your reviews for that month into that list for a chance to win a credit at PaperbackSwap.
  • At the end of the  year, come back and leave a comment with the link to your wrap-up post (if different from your challenge post list).  All those who completed the challenge will be eligible to win a tiered Gift Card from Amazon or The Book Depository (see below).
  • Sign-ups are open until January 31, 2012. All books must be read between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2012.

Levels of Participation:

  1. A Lick and a Promise – 10 books ($5 Prize)
  2. By Hook or by Crook – 25 books ($10 Prize)
  3. Make a Mash – 50 books ($15 Prize)
  4. The Whole Kit ‘n Caboodle – 75 Books ($25 Prize)

What do I read?

Wikipedia has a great list of authors who write Westerns – you can find that list here.

  1. Linda

I made a list of books I plan to read in my post. I’m looking forward to trying this challenge!

  2. MarthaE

I have enjoyed quite a few books by Louis L’Amour, Zane Grey and Max Brand.
I know I have some books by authors in the list…I’ll think about signing up.
So this genre is for “Old West.” Does it include Historical Romance set in that time period or just ‘cowboy’ type? I see Kat Martin on the list and I’m wondering if Joan Johnston and Karen Kay would qualify.
    Thanks.
