Stop SOPA/PIPA

This site has gone dark today in protest of the U.S. Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and PROTECT-IP Act (PIPA). The U.S. Congress is about to censor the Internet, even though the vast majority of Americans are opposed. We need to kill these bills to protect our rights to free speech, privacy, and prosperity. Merry Christmas!

I hope you all have a wonderful, love-filled holiday!

I’m Alive

This is my car, Moby.  I bought Moby on June 30, 2011.  On September 9, 2011 this car, guided by God’s hand, saved my life.

At approximately 4:25 in the afternoon last Friday my sister, Candace, and I were driving home from attending school at Eureka College.  We were laughing, had just ordered sushi in our typical “celebrate Friday” fashion, I had just joked that she should call in and we go on a shopping trip for some books, and then it happened.

A man was stopped at a stop sign on a road ahead of us.  We both saw him stopped there and thought nothing of it.  Then, when I was a merely 2-3 car lengths away, he pulled out in front of me.  Candace screamed, I threw my arm over her, slammed on the brakes and we hit him.

I was admitted to the hospital on September 9, 2011.  I was not released until September 12, 2011.  I am currently suffering from a fractured right ankle, badly sprained left ankle, fractured L5 vertebrae, bruised tailbone and multiple bruises/abrasions.  Candace is relatively unharmed, no bruises, but she does have a very sore neck and is experiencing headaches and memory loss, like I am.  The other driver is alive, we do not know his condition.

Aside from the pain, I am experiencing what is every readers nightmare.  I passed out for 10 seconds in the car after the accident – this is not a good thing and the seriousness of it still has not fully impacted me, although its starting to now that I realize just how significant it was that there was a Priest present in the ER throughout my entire experience there.

In short, I am unable to read for any length of time.  After about 10 minutes my eyes roll up in my head and I cannot force another word through.  This is devastating to me, and I hope I recover from it quickly as, you all know, reading is something I’m passionate about – but not only that, it’s a stabilizing element in my life.  On top of my own personal reading, I am a mere 2 1/2 weeks into the start of school, my first semester in a classroom setting in over 14 years.

Prayers, thoughts, good wishes are all appreciated.  I have several reviews in advance posted on my blog here, but after those run out things will be slowing down while I attempt to get my groove back on.

Thank you for reading this blog, for making me feel as if I have something somewhat important to say about the books I read, and for all of your support.  I’m glad I will still be here to post and to chat with you all.

God bless.

- Lydia

Wishing you, and all of your families, a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Second Day of Birthday Fun!

What I did for my birthday!

New Blog Design!

Angel from Ninefly Designs has done a fantastic job redesigning The Lost Entwife for me!  I’m still working out a few kinks and getting things up and moving, but I figure that will be a great project for the Bloggiesta this weekend.

So take a look around and let me know what you think!

Friday – What’s New?

First, I’d like to start off with announcing a winner for the Indivisible contest!

Congrats Melanie!

Be sure to check your email today for information on how to claim your prize!

What else is going on this week?  Well.. where do I begin?

  • My mother left this past week after going through a whirlwind of activity and cleaning out my closets for me.  I’m horrible about putting away winter clothes and pulling out the spring/summer – but I do love it when it’s actually done (for neatness reasons as well as for comfort!).
  • I’m having a fantastic week of reading so far – but still have three library books that were due yesterday (!!) so I’ll be incurring some fees as I rush to get them read.
  • Last night my book club met and had a really interesting discussion on the changes in perception of women and housekeeping.  I believe the mutual consensus was that none of us would wish to be a housewife in the ’50′s, but a housewife in the late 1800′s who has servants wouldn’t be that bad.  It sure was a lively chat!
  • This weekend I’m planning on seeing a movie – but which one has me all twisted up!  There’s so many I want to see and just not enough time.  What do you all suggest?

I hope everyone has a great weekend! I have a new contest going up today so be sure to watch for it and watch for a new contest going up in June as well.. I think it’ll be very familiar to a lot of you!

ABOUT THE HOP:

In the spirit of the Friday Follow, I thought it would be cool to do a Book Blogger Hop to give us all book bloggers and readers a chance to connect and find new blogs that we may be missing out on!  So, I created this weekly BOOK PARTY where book bloggers and readers can connect to find new blogs to read, make new friends, support each other, and generally just share our love of books!  It will also give blog readers a chance to find other book blogs that they may not know existed!  So, grab the logo, post about the Hop on your blog, and start PARTYING!!

The Hop lasts a full week so if you don’t have time to Hop today, come back later and join the fun!  This is a weekly event!

Friday: Week in Review

It’s that time again, the day to look back on the rest of the week and think.. where did all the time go?

Last week I spoke about how my nephew has HSP, and we’re still struggling with this nasty virus.  I also found out it was recently featured on an episode of House – so now people actually know what I’m talking about when I say HSP!

Aside from dealing with the sick boy my week has been a back and forth of picking up and dropping of kids at school (half-days for him, whole days for her), two doctor appointments and numerous other errand runnings.  While at home it’s been straightening up, getting the whole de-sicked and preparing for the incoming visits of not one..but two grandma’s!  Whew. I’m busy!  But not so busy that I can’t read.  All that time sitting in offices, or the car while waiting has allowed me some much needed reading time and I’m much more relaxed then I would have been without it.

Today my nephew and I have a morning of fun planned since he feels well enough to go out for a few hours.  On the schedule?  IHOP and Oceans (the movie). Will be fun!

Friday: Week in Review

I haven’t done one of these in a while and I really need to get back on the ball regarding them.  First, let me talk about what has been going on for the last two weeks and has my household all crazy.

My nephew who is 7 was diagnosed with HSP (Henoch-Schonlein purpura) 9 days ago.  Since that time he’s been unable to eat, developed a nasty rash, had painful swelling of his joints and, as of two days ago, began vomiting liquids. For those of you unfamiliar with HSP the description is as follows:

Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP) is a form of blood vessel inflammation orvasculitis. There are many different conditions that feature vasculitis. Each of the forms of vasculitis tends to involve certain characteristic blood vessels. HSP affects the small vessels called capillaries in the skin and frequently the kidneys. HSP results in skin rash (most prominent over the buttocks and behind the lower extremities) associated with joint inflammation (arthritis) and sometimes cramping pain in the abdomen. Henoch-Schonlein purpura is also referred to as anaphylactoid purpura.

Yesterday afternoon my nephew was admitted to the hospital.  He’s doing better today, keeping fluids and some food down and hopefully will be released this afternoon.

What does this mean for me?  Well.. my nice tidy schedule has been all over the place these last few weeks.  With my nephew being home all week and me occupied in keeping him company/sitting with him all my best laid plans for participating in the Blogathon this weekend (today) were dashed.  So for those of you visiting today that expected to see something here, I do apologize, and plan on participating in September.  I just simply did not have the time or resources to plan for today due to the unexpectedness of this sickness.

So aside from this, nothing much else has happened this week.  I hope that your week has been less eventful!  And here’s hoping that my nephew is on the mend and will be back to his normal, cheerful, talkative self very quickly.
