Summary from GoodReads:

Laying hands upon the injured and dying, Avry of Kazan absorbs their wounds and diseases into herself. But rather than being honored for her skills, she is hunted. Healers like Avry are accused of spreading the plague that has decimated the Fifteen Realms, leaving the survivors in a state of chaos.

Stressed and tired from hiding, Avry is abducted by a band of rogues who, shockingly, value her gift above the golden bounty offered for her capture. Their leader, an enigmatic captor-protector with powers of his own, is unequivocal in his demands: Avry must heal a plague-stricken prince—leader of a campaign against her people. As they traverse the daunting Nine Mountains, beset by mercenaries and magical dangers, Avry must decide who is worth healing and what is worth dying for. Because the price of peace may well be her life…

My Review:

I’ve come to expect awesome things from Maria Snyder.  She writes about strong females, the perfect touch of magic, action, a little bit of romance – basically everything that makes the teenager in me giggle with delight.  Her latest book, Touch of Power, provided all those things.

Seriously, if you want to lose yourself in a good book, and know you have an entire day to allow yourself to get lost in it, you cannot fail with picking up one of Snyder’s books.  With Touch of Power, I found myself trapped away in this world where healing is not considered to be a good thing, and the young heroine is on the run…constantly.  So much so, in fact, even I was out of breath reading it!

The imagination of Snyder is to be envied.  The Death Lilies were magnificent – so incredibly interesting. The choice having to be made by Avry was heart-breaking .. how would you choose?  The combination of interesting characters, rough situations, and action scenes kept me reading from beginning to end in one sitting.  And that, my friends, is fun reading.

Outside In by Maria V. Snyder

Reason for Reading:
  • I enjoyed Inside Out and when I saw this was on NetGalley I had to pick it up!

I  recommend:

Summary from GoodReads:

Me? A Leader? Okay, I did prove that there’s more to Inside than we knew. That a whole world exists beyond this cube we live in. And finding that led to a major rebellion – between worker scrubs like me and the snobby uppers who rule our world. Make that ruled. Because of me, we’re free. I thought that meant I was off the hook, and could go off on my own again – while still touching base with Riley, of course. He’s the one upper I think I can trust. But then we learned that there’s outside and then there is Outside. And something from Outside wants In.

My Review:

I love science fiction.  I love, love it.  I didn’t use to love reading science fiction, but the Young Adult genre of books had a huge part in converting me.

I was always more of a fantasy girl and Snyder’s Poison Study series really had me digging her version of fantasy – so when she started putting out some more sci-fi type (not SyFy, you silly people), I jumped at the opportunity to read them.  I wasn’t disappointed.

In Outside In, Trella offers the reader a view on a very conflicted, very real teenager who’s struggling with taking responsibility after inciting a rebellion in Inside Out.  I could relate to that, I mean – who wants to make decisions that could impact thousands of lives, especially if you are a teenager and wanting just to live free of torture with a few basic, humane rights.

While parts of the book are a bit far-fetched, I really enjoyed the continuation of the story begun.  I thought it an honest, realistic view of what happens when one government is overthrown and another established in its place.  I loved the ending (and normally those types of endings I really don’t, but it fit SO WELL here) and went positively ga-ga over the book as a whole.  Two thumbs up for Snyder!  Job well done.

Inside Out by Maria V. Snyder

Reason(s) for Reading:
  • I’ve been a fan of Maria V. Snyder since reading her Poison Study series.
I recommend:

Summary from GoodReads:

Keep Your Head Down.

Don’t Get Noticed.

Or Else.

I’m Trella. I’m a scrub. A nobody. One of thousands who work the lower levels, keeping Inside clean for the Uppers. I’ve got one friend, do my job and try to avoid the Pop Cops. So what if I occasionally use the pipes to sneak around the Upper levels? The only neck at risk is my own…until I accidentally start a rebellion and become the go-to girl to lead a revolution.

My Review:

One thing I love about Maria V. Snyder is I can always count on her to give me a nice, strong female protagonist. I wasn’t disappointed with Inside Out as a result.

Although part of the story reminded me a bit of Uglies by Scott Westerfield (especially the beginning) it quickly veered away into a story of secrets and uprising against the unfair.  Mix in a bit of mystery and you have the makings for a heart-pounding thrilling tale.

Although I loved this book for it’s own reasons, it isn’t by any means, perfect. One of the surprise “twists” could be seen coming from a mile away and there were a few parts in the book that just seemed to be a bit too neatly handled – everything falling into place a bit too easily. But overall I was very pleased with Inside Out and will happily recommend it to any fans of dystopia.
